Surname Saturday: Pacheco

Pacheco is one main surnames of my maternal family tree.  The line originates from Fenais de Vera Cruz (aka Fenais d’Ajuda), Nordeste, Sao Miguel Island, Azores.

My first known ancestor with this surname is Francisca Pacheco, b. ca 1730, Fenais de Vera Cruz.  I do not know who her husband was.

She had at least one son, Jose Pacheco, born in Sao Pedro, Nordestinho, Sao Miguel Island.  He married Francisca Theresa, the daughter of Francisco Perreira Furtado and Joana de Medeiros, on 26 Feb 1791 in Fenais de Vera Cruz.

The couple had a son, Joao Pacheco, who was also known as Joao Pacheco Grande.  The Grande can refer to his status in the community, his girth, or that he was the older Joao (with a son also name Joao).  Or, maybe he thought himself grand. LOL

Joao married Jacintha Rosa Ferreira, the daughter of Narciso Jose Ferreira Grota and Ana de Jesus, on 24 April 1815 in Fenais de Vera Cruz.

The couple had at least five children.  My ancestor was Jacintho Pacheco, a person who I’ve found very little information on.  He was born ca. 1720 and died sometime between 1876 and 1882.  I do know that he was a sapateiro, a shoemaker, which makes him somewhat different from the field laborers that make up my tree.

He married Ana Jacinta de Melo, from the nearby village of Achada, Nordeste, Sao Miguel Island, the daughter of Jose Francisco de Melo and Rosa Pimentel.  They were married around 1860.  I’ve haven’t been able to locate a record of their marriage in either village, which is so frustrating!

Jacintho died before the family migrated to Hawaii in 1882.  Ana Jacintha was a widow, bringing 6 of her 8 children with her.  They settled in Kilauea, Kauai, where they worked the Kilauea Sugar Plantation.  The oldest came on his own a year or so later.  Another daughter either died before they left or was left behind–a common practice.

The Pacheco surname mutates from here.  My line becomes Smith to hide the fact that my Great Grandfather had leprosy and was smuggled to California (a story for another day and another post).  Some of his siblings took the surname Algravia and it’s variants Algarva and Algrava.  I do not know why.   So far, I have found no connection to that surname and this line.  It could be an ancestral name, a village where someone was born, the surname of someone the family held dearly, or any number of other ideas.  Why they adopted it is also a mystery.  It may have been to cover the trail of my smuggled Great Grandfather, though that doesn’t make much sense.  Some came to California with Pacheco, changed to Algravia, and changed back to Pacheco.  Some never used Algravia or the variants ever.  Oh, how I wish someone in my family kept a diary!

The Pacheco’s were quite prolific.  I am fairly sure they were plotting to populate the entire island of Kauai on their own.  In order to not blow up anyone’s computer, I’ll stick to six generations for this descendants list.
