Surname Saturday: Costa Carneiro of Maia

I took a brief hiatus from Surname Saturday.  I’m continuing through my Azorean maternal roots.  The last entry I did was on Pacheco de Resendes of Maia.  Today, I will post about the Costa Carneiro’s of Maia.

The first person of this surname in my tree is Josefa Costa Carneiro.  She was my 6th great grandmother.  She was also my 6th cousin 9 times removed.  How do you like them cross circuits?  LOL  That’s what happens when a family lives in one place for many generations.  They become related to themselves.

Josefa was born ca 1700 in Maia, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel Island, Azores.  Her parents were Tomaz da Costa Carneiro and Ana de Souza, both of Maia.  They were married 18 Jun 1704 in Maia.  Tomaz was also married to Maria do Couto, the daughter of Manoel Correia and Maria do Couto.

Josefa married Manoel Pacheco de Resendes 11 Feb 1727 in Maia.  Manoel was the son of Jordao de Souza and Francisca de Resendes Tavares.  So far, I only have one child for Josefa and Manoel, a son also named Manoel Pacheco de Resendes.

This line goes back to Josefa’s 7th great grandparents.  The last ancestor is my 15th great grandparent.  As with many Azorean lines, most of the older ancestors have different surnames.  The surnames weren’t always carried forward.  In fact, it seems, they enjoyed confusing me by choosing surnames out of thin air (or so it seems.)  Because of this reason, I’ve decided to list all generations here rather than write up several smaller posts.

This is the ahnentafel chart of Josefa Costa Carneiro:

Surname Saturday: Pacheco de Resendes

This week I’m tackling the Pacheco de Resendes line of Maia, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel Island, Azores.

My Great Great Grandfather, Jozimas de Braga, was born to Jacintho Jose de Braga and Rosa de Medeiros Pacheco.  Rosa starts the Pacheco de Resendes tree even if she didn’t use the surname.

Rosa was born 4 May 1810 in Maia.  She married Jacintho Jose de Braga (b. 21 Sep 1806, Maia), in Maia in 1829.  Her line goes on for many generations and links to nobility across Europe.  I’m going to focus only on the one surname.  I don’t want to break the internet.

Rosa was one of 11 children of Antonio Pacheco de Resendes and Anna de Jesus.  The children of Antonio and Anna were Michaella, Remigio, Maria, Francisco, Francisca, Antonia I, Jacinta I, Antonia II, Rosa, Manoel, and Jacinta II.  Rosa’s brother, Remigio Pacheco, is the ancestor of people who migrated to Massachusetts ca 1900 and used the surnames Pacheco, Remigio, and Romiza (which is how Remigio was pronounced by the family).

Pacheco de Resendes goes out five generations from Antonio.  It starts with the paternal line, then shifts to the maternal, and back to the paternal.  It ends with Capitao Bartholomeu Pacheco de Resendes, born in 1700 in Maia to Paolo Pacheco and Aldonca de Rezende.  Bartholomeu married Barbara Cabral de Mello in Maia in 1653.

There are three more ancestors in this line after Bartholomeu.  They use the Pacheco surname.  The last ancestor, Pedro Vaz Pacheco, was born in Portugal, probably in the mid 1500s.  Pedro Vaz Pacheco is my twelfth great grandfather.

This is the ahnentafel chart for Rosa.  Notice the numbers skip (and so do the surnames!) as it goes from paternal to maternal to paternal again.

Surname Saturday: Correa of Maia

Today I’m listing out my Correa line (also spelled Correya) of Maia, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel Island.  This is a tiny maternal line that connects to my Paiva de Braga’s.

Pedro de Paiva’s mother was Catharina Rocha.  She married Manoel de Paiva  on 28 Dec 1705, in Maia.  Manoel’s line can be found in the post Paiva of Maia and Achada.

Catharina’s mother was Maria Coreya.  She married Manoel Viera in 1680 in Maia.  She died before Catharina was married.

Catharina’s mother was Maria Correa.  It was interesting to find the Coreya spelling as Correa or Correia is more common.  Perhaps Coreya was an earlier spelling.  Since their wasn’t much standardization it may have been the recorder’s preference.

The line ends with Maria and her husband, Pedro Afonso.  I don’t have any details on this couple.  Maria Correa is my 9th great grandmother.

Here is the ahnentafel for this line:
