If you aren’t researching on FamilySearch.org, you are missing out on one of the best free genealogy database collections available. FamilySearch is maintained by the Mormon Church and draws from their vast collection.
Not everything in their collection is on the website. Only a fraction has been digitized and indexed.
What Titles Are Of Interest to Portuguese Genealogists Researching Hawaii?
FamilySearch records are divided into two section. One section is found under Search>Records. These databases are indexed though most are only partially indexed. Each entry in the list gives you the title of the collection, how many records are indexed in the collection, and when it was last updated.

Some collections are indexes only, so you won’t see any real documents in those collections.

- Click on “Browse All Published Collections”.
- In the left hand column you’ll see geographical navigation under Place. Click on United States of America, then scroll down to Hawaii and click on it.
You will need to create a free account and login to access the records.
Note: These aren’t all the Hawaii databases that FamilySearch has. There are others like the 1890 Kingdom Census that are available through the catalog as “browse only” collections (there aren’t any indexes). Other’s are available at a Family History Center exclusively. I’ll discuss those at a later date.
