Sophie was my grandfather’s cousin. She has a special place in the family history. Sophie was the first of the family to leave Hawaii and not settle in California. Her husband was in the military and decided to go back to his hometown in Missouri. They were there when the 1930 census was taken, but later moved back to Oakland, California. I have often wondered what that was like for Sophie come from a large immigrant family and moving to a small Midwest town without any of the same cultural roots.
