Mary Ann was the daughter of Martin and Catherine (Dolan) Kelly. She married Frederick Meincke in San Francisco ca 1877. They had several children together.
The couple ran boardinghouses and saloons in San Francisco mostly in the Mission Road area. One of those businesses was called the Five Mile House which they took over around 1889-1900.
I think Mary must have been an exceptional woman for her time. Instead of her brothers, she was the one in charge of handling the affairs of her father’s estate and her uncle, Patrick Dolan. Patrick’s estate was contested and lead to a lengthy legal battle between West Coast and East Coast cousins. It makes me think that she might have had some business sense, otherwise, why not give the sons these duties?
Mary lived a long life. She survived her husband’s death in 1901. She survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. I notice in records that many of her children remained single and lived with her until her death. The family bonds must have been very tight.
She died in 1935 at the age of 75.
