The Danger of Surname Research with Portuguese Ancestry

The Danger of Surname Research with Portuguese Ancestry

From time to time, I get asked whether I have a connection with someone.  It usually goes like this:  “I have Pacheco’s too.  We must be related!”  In the beginning, when we are naive, we don’t fully grasp how many different families there really are.  Just because there is a similar surname doesn’t mean there is a connection. I am not familiar with the naming practices in a lot of countries.  I do have experience with France.  With my French…

Genea Challenge Two: How far can you go?

Genea Challenge Two: How far can you go?

This is the second challenge set out in Randy Seaver’s Saturday Night Genealogy Fun for the Genealympics.  This time I am to take one surname from my tree and write about how far back I can go. Catharina’s mother was Maria Coreya.  She married Manoel Viera in 1680 in Maia.  She died before Catharina was married….

SNGF: How Many Surnames Part Three

SNGF: How Many Surnames Part Three

This is the third and last installment in my surname list statistics posts.  This database covers my Lassalle Mazeres side of the tree.  This database covers my Dad’s entire line.
