Mystery Photo of the Week from September Solved!

Mystery Photo of the Week from September Solved!

On 9 September 2015, I posted this Mystery Photo of the Week. There were two photographs of a little girl whose name was forgotten. One was her confirmation photo. The other was a photograph with two women. I’m happy to say that the little girl has been identified. The girl in this photograph is Isabella Pacheco aka Isabella DeBraga and Bella Ventura. It was probably taken around 1909-1910. Isabella’s birth parents were Joao Pacheco and Joana Gonsalves Cardozo. When Joao…

52 Ancestors Week 38: The Portuguese of East 25th Street, Oakland

52 Ancestors Week 38: The Portuguese of East 25th Street, Oakland

This week’s 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks is easy.  The theme is Favorite Place to Research and I know exactly where that would be. This is a very specific location.  It is where my Portuguese research began:  E. 25th Street in Oakland, Alameda County, California. What makes this street so special?  Why am I drawn to it? Mystery Photo: Who is This Little Portuguese Girl?

Mystery Photo: Who is This Little Portuguese Girl?

This week’s mystery photo is actually two photos involving the same unknown little girl. These were in the collection of Marie Gloria (Bonita) Medeiros, my grandfather’s cousin.  They were shown to me by her granddaughter, Barbara. The girl has Portuguese roots and was born in either Hawaii (most likely Kauai) or California. The first photo is a Communion Photo. The frame states that it was taken at the Trout Studio in Salinas, Monterey Co., CA. The second photo shows the…

52 Ancestors Week 35: Were Theodoro and Maria Educated?

This week’s 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks theme is schooling.  I’ve written quite a bit about this topic this year.  This time I would like to answer the question as to whether my Azorean great grandparents, Theodoro and Maria (de Braga) Pacheco Smith, had any schooling in Hawaii? Schooling For Children was Part of the Sugar Plantation Contract Under the sugar plantation contract system of the 1880s, laborers who signed a contract were given certain benefits.  How these benefits were…

Mystery Photo: Who is the Young Man Possibly from Hawaii?

Mystery Photo: Who is the Young Man Possibly from Hawaii?

I’ve got another photo mystery for you this week.  This comes from the collection of a Bonita and de Braga cousin.  The photo is of an unknown young man all dress up and ready to go.  Perhaps it is prom night or some other special occasion? I have no idea who this is.  However, I think the photo might have been taken in Hawaii (I have nothing to base that on, by the way.  It just doesn’t look like California.) …
