I can't believe it took me this long to find this site. I've been researching for a very long time the Guido Family who originally lived in my house from 1912 thru the early 40's. I live at 2034 E. 25th st. I'm very interested in the history. I wish I could find photos of the Guido's at the house or in the neighborhood at the time. It's been very difficult to find anything on them other than the info from the Oakland history room: the house was sold to or built for Joseph Guido and his wife in 1912 for 2400.00 and they had two sons....

I was always told that my mom's grandfather was born in Ireland. That's what mom's aunt, his daughter told us. After researching I discovered that while he claimed to be born in Boston, there was no record of his birth. We believe he was born on the way to California and they just claimed Boston as his birthplace. When we told our aunt, she was so embarrassed to have been telling people her whole life he was born in Ireland. She should be forgiven as her parents died when she was quite young and she was in an orphanage in SF until an aunt got her out. She went to live with them in the guard's quarters at San Quentin Prison. You never know what you will find when you do genealogy.

My great-grandmother Lucy Ellis lived in that same flat on 16th Street in her final years. She was living there with one of her grown sons at the time of her death in 1940. I'm struck by the similarities to Catherine -- Lucy's husband also died relatively young, and left a young son, and multiple grown children. If you'd like a photo of Catherine's grave marker, let me know. I'm out at Holy Cross regularly, doing research.
